How to Add Value with Certification
By: American Nurses Association
For nurses, the benefits of certification are clear: professional recognition and credibility, professional achievement, personal accomplishment, and more. But did you know that certification can add value to your organization, too?
Research shows a link between certification and nurse knowledge, techniques, and judgement that affects patient safety and outcomes. Building a team of certified nurses promotes a shared purpose of caring and working for patients.
Certification preparation courses and workshops give your nurses a leg up in the certification process. Hosting an ANA Certification Review Workshop is an easy and convenient way to get more of your nurses certified. But don’t just take our word for it.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health recently hosted two on-site Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing review workshops for nurses interested in pursuing the PMHRN-BC credential. Lu Ann Sanderson, DNP, PMHCNS-BC, RN, Chief of Nursing, says the workshop, coupled with a certification review course, engaged and motivated her nursing team.
“All seats were filled and the RNs who attended were engaged with the instructor, motivated for change, and reported that they enjoyed the interactions and camaraderie. [The nurses] bonded and made future plans to study together. To date, 10 of them have achieved PMHRN-BC – nearly 17% of those who completed the course. Bringing the course with workshop together was well worth the time and energy.
The opportunity to host was fun and heartwarming. Having an experienced educator on site gave added support for the process, provided encouragement to the nurses across the department, and promoted discussions across other disciplines and administration. Our workforce is very diverse and many speak English as a second language. The personal touch with the instruction-led workshop has been a critical component for engaging the most nurses. Some nurses are even talking about submitting abstracts to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s annual conference!”
ANA currently offers on-site workshops for 10 specialty and APRN certifications. Find out how hosting a workshop can benefit your nursing team, your organization, and your bottom line.
